The optimal time to visit Congaree National Park is during the fall months, particularly October and early November, when you can experience comfortable temperatures and stunning fall foliage while avoiding the typical crowds. Spring (March through May) offers another excellent window for visiting, featuring mild weather and the unique opportunity to witness the spectacular synchronous firefly display that occurs for approximately two weeks between mid-May and mid-June. Summer months can be challenging due to high humidity and temperatures, while winter visits, though less crowded, may face occasional flooding and cooler temperatures. The park is open year-round, but planning your visit during these prime seasons will enhance your experience.

Congaree National Park is located in central South Carolina, situated in Hopkins, approximately 18 miles southeast of Columbia, the state capital. The park encompasses over 26,000 acres of pristine wilderness, including the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States. The park's main entrance and Harry Hampton Visitor Center can be accessed via South Cedar Creek Road, making it easily reachable for visitors coming from both Interstate 77 and Highway 601.

Congaree National Park offers a diverse range of activities that showcase its unique bottomland ecosystem. Visitors can explore over 25 miles of hiking trails, including the popular elevated Boardwalk Loop Trail that provides an accessible way to experience the forest. Canoeing and kayaking are popular activities, especially during the spring and fall when Cedar Creek is navigable. The park offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and bird watching, with over 170 species of birds calling the park home. Photography enthusiasts will find countless opportunities to capture the park's ancient trees, wildlife, and stunning landscapes. Visitors can also participate in ranger-led programs, engage in fishing activities (with proper licensing), and explore the park's extensive backcountry areas. For those interested in education, the Harry Hampton Visitor Center provides interpretive exhibits and educational programs about the park's unique ecosystem and history.
